MORE VISIBILITY DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL MORE PRESTIGE

Many artists assume more exposure will automatically bring more opportunities.
With more exhibitions, press, attention, podcasts, panels, and social media, they believe they can increase their position in the market. But an artist can have broad visibility and still not be well received by those who matter most to their long-term trajectory.
Visibility, validation, and prestige are not the same. Visibility amplifies and creates awareness. Validation is relative to personal opinion. Prestige shapes perception. It is created by the quality of exposure, the credibility of the association, and the way each moment builds upon the one before it. This is why some artists get attention online but do not convert that attention into sales.
Not every opportunity strengthens an artist’s market. Unfortunately, some opportunities dilute it. In a market shaped by galleries, dealers, advisors, auctions, fairs, private sales, institutions, collectors, and cultural context, where and how an artist appears matters. The most discerning artists are very selective. This does not mean an artist should be obnoxiously precious, inaccessible, or afraid of being visible; they just should be intentional. Prestige is not created by being seen everywhere. It is created by being seen in the right context, by the right people, for the right reasons.
Many opportunities presented to artists sound very impressive. It can be tough to navigate what to entertain. A strong question is not “Will this give me visibility?” Better questions are:
What will this visibility do for my positioning?
Will it strengthen the market narrative around the work?
Will it place me in the right context?
Will it reach the right audience?
Will it deepen collector confidence?
Will it support market expansion?
Artists who build enduring careers understand that prestige requires restraint and patience. What an artist declines can be just as important as what they accept.
Visibility may create awareness, but prestige is built through quality, context, validation, consistency, and time.
